Transforming Brecon Carreg Bottles into High-Performance Foam Rollers

Back to our blog

As title sponsor of the Porthcawl 10K, we’re committed to supporting initiatives that reduce waste and promote a more circular approach to sustainability.

That’s why we’re excited to be working with Welsh manufacturer LAYR55 on a new circular economy initiative that transforms used plastic bottles into high-performance foam rollers used by athletes.

How it Works

At the Brecon Carreg Porthcawl 10K, participants will have the opportunity to recycle their empty Brecon Carreg water bottles in specially branded recycling bins located throughout the race village and finish area.

Our volunteer plogging team will also be collecting discarded bottles along the route to ensure as many as possible are recovered and recycled.

The bottles collected at the event will then be processed and transformed into new products by LAYR55, helping to keep valuable materials in use and out of landfill.

From Hydration to Recovery

The next stage of the journey is where things get really exciting.

Using advanced 3D printing technology, LAYR55 will manufacture foam rollers using recycled plastic, including bottles collected at our events.

These foam rollers will then be used by athletes in the recovery area at the Cardiff Half Marathon, meaning the same bottles used to keep runners hydrated can help support their recovery just a few months later.

About the Foam Rollers

The LAYR55 Wave Apex foam roller is designed and manufactured in Wales using a sustainable 3D printing process powered by renewable energy.

Unlike traditional foam rollers, they are built for durability, designed to last longer, and can even be returned to LAYR55 at the end of their life through a take-back scheme. This ensures materials can be reused, repurposed, or recycled again, creating a truly circular product.

How You Can Help

If you’re taking part in the Brecon Carreg Porthcawl 10K, or coming along to spectate, simply place your empty Brecon Carreg bottles in one of the dedicated recycling bins or hand them to a member of our plogging team.

Every bottle collected helps support this innovative Welsh sustainability project and demonstrates how small actions can make a big difference.

Together, we’re helping turn waste into a valuable resource and showing what’s possible when sport, sustainability, and innovation come together.
